Alan Ginsberg (1926-1997) is wellicht de bekendste Amerikaanse dichter van de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw. Jood, homoseksueel, boeddhist, anti-oorlogsactivist, spil van de ‘Beat generation‘ - in dit interview van 38 minuten kijkt hij terug op een bewogen leven.
Zijn bekendste gedicht is Howl, waarvan de beginregels luiden:
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix;
Angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection
to the starry dynamo in the machinery of the night.
